COHJU is pleased to present "SURFACE NOISE," a two-person exhibition by Hidekazu Tanaka and Kio Griffith from May 18 to July 20, 2024.
Hidekazu Tanaka was born in 1979 in Hyogo Prefecture. He graduated from Kyoto City University of Arts with a PhD in Oil Painting. Hidekazu attempts to expand the possibilities of contemporary abstract painting by incorporating the spatiotemporal, objectivity, and immersive context of music, such as improvisation and a sense of rhythm, into two-dimensional expression.
Kio Griffith was born in 1963 in Kanagawa Prefecture. He is a visual sound artist and associate professor at Tama Art University. His projects are based on his research and interest in the region and its history, including his own roots, and he continues to present works that cross a variety of media, including sound and visual expression.
The title of this exhibition, “Surface Noise,” refers to the friction noise that occurs when a needle is dropped on a record. Although their approaches are different, both artists use “sound” as an important factor in their works. What kind of resonance or reverberation will be created by the needle dropped into the space between their expressions beyond the noise it lands on? We hope that you will take this opportunity to view the exhibition space, which is constructed as a duet, like a sound that mutually responds to each other.
