COHJU contemporary art is pleased to present CHUNKS OF PLAY, a solo exhibition by Kyoto-based artist, Hidekazu Tanaka from 1 August to 5 September 2020.
Hidekazu Tanaka is currently a PhD candidate at Kyoto City University of Arts, and has devoted himself to the expansion of possibility on abstract painting with today’s standpoint. Tanaka’s works have been shown in many exhibitions all over Japan, in both private and public collections and collaborated with many music and fashion industries.
On this solo exhibition, Tanaka shows his recent works reflecting the idea of spatiotemporal paintings which he has pursued and put into practice for the most of time. We will also have a live painting performance during the exhibition. Please wait for further information which will be announced at our website or SNS soon.
STATEMENT
I chose the word PLAY for this exhibition title since my painting process has a lot in common with musical composition. All my works are induced by a minimum rule based on reference to masterpieces in the art history and review of my previous works. That rule is like a simply constructed chord score; the composition appears between physicality and improvisation. That’s how my painting comes into existence.
On this solo show, I do sampling and cut-up each definition of the illusionism, the flatness and the medium specificity that were the main subjects playing an important role in the abstract expressionism but also the reasons losing its own flexibility, in order to expand the possibilities of abstract expression, and I play them all.
